PSHE Curriculum Intent:
Intent:
Our intention is that, when pupils leave Hilbre High School, they do so with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to play an active role in today’s society. We want our pupils to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and to recognise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. Our rich curriculum inspires students to succeed through a learning journey that provides knowledge, skills and opportunities for them to be responsible global citizens with positive life chances. Our students will believe in their ability to succeed, becoming confident and resilient learners. They will engage with their community, be literate, numerate and have a lifelong love of learning. They will know what challenge and success feels like for them as an individual. Our teachers will, regardless of student ability, age or background, develop curiosity and critical thinking, foster aspiration and have a belief in success for all students.

Implementation:
How do we deliver PSHE at Hilbre High School?
- All pupils in Years 7,8,10 and 11 have two lessons per fortnight; each lesson lasts for one hour
- All pupils in Year 9 and KS5 have one lesson per fortnight; each lesson lasts for one hour
- Medium term planning is given to all staff delivering PSHE, in guidance with The PSHE Association, to meet the needs of all pupils
- Staff delivering PSHE attend regular meetings with the Progress Leader for PSHE to ensure dissemination of key information and regular training
- Staff have access to training resources to continue their professional development
- Materials are age appropriate and differentiated to the needs of ALL students
- Materials in lessons present information in an objective, balanced and sensitive manner
- Lessons encourage the development of social skills and strategies, which will reduce the risk of exploitation, misunderstanding and abuse
- Lessons are fully inclusive of all genders, sexual orientation and all types of families (LGBTQ+ inclusive)
- Lessons ensure that BAME, LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities are positively represented in the curriculum
- Lessons prepare students for the journey from adolescence to adulthood
- Lessons place paramount importance on online safety and the risks of using social media and the internet for sexual purposes
- Assemblies are linked to cover key topic areas and calendared events that would benefit the whole school
- Wherever possible and following published guidelines on their use, we encourage the use of visitors to enrich the PSHE programme. This includes members of the school community, local community representatives, staff from Brook, local Police Officers, drugs project workers, local employers, providers of theatre in education projects, and others
Impact:
We firmly believe that a meaningful PSHE curriculum is the key to pupils becoming confident, tolerant and well-rounded individuals. We hope that:
- Pupils will be able to approach a wide range of real-life situations and apply their skills, knowledge and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
- Following exposure to a range of global issues and problems, pupils will build up tolerance and develop a sense of responsibility to being a global citizen
- From engagement with a wide variety of materials in lessons, pupils will understand the different lifestyles that people live and will be respectful and tolerant towards those leading different lifestyles to themselves

What we think is important about our subject:
Personal, social and health education (PSHE) helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active, responsible citizens. Students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.
They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially; tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They also find out about the main political and social institutions that affect their lives and about their responsibilities, rights and duties as individuals and members of communities. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity, diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.
We believe our high quality Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) will stay with our students for life. RSE is not about encouraging teenagers to become sexually active; nor is it about promoting any particular lifestyle of relationship choice. RSE is about providing students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make safe, healthy and informed relationship choices as young people and in the future as adults. We believe in empowering our students to understand their bodies, to reflect on their relationship values and to be able to openly discuss relationships and sex. We believe that this approach will reduce the risk of unhealthy and abusive relationships.
The Curriculum
Our PSHE programme is planned and delivered through a one hour a week PSHE curriculum to all students in Years 7,8,10 and 11, and one hour a fortnight PSHE curriculum to all students in Years 9 and KS5.
Our PSHE programme is taught through a range of teaching methods and interactive activities, including: role play; group and class discussion; online programs; student-led research; developing understanding of terms through regular quizzes; and specialist workshops.
Lessons are differentiated by the PSHE staff to ensure that all learners can access and benefit from the PSHE curriculum. A strong emphasis is placed on the development of social and communication skills; this often allows students with literacy needs to be successful through verbal input.
Selected resources, such as books and film clips, will be used which support and promote understanding within a moral/values context and underpin our school values.
What are our assessments?
Students complete an assessment sheet at the beginning of each new unit, outlining their confidence and prior knowledge on key aspects of the unit. This sheet is glued into exercise books and revisited at the end of the unit, where students can indicate their progress in each aspect.
Throughout each Unit of Work, pieces of extended writing are completed, along with opportunities for pupils to respond to key questions. Students also focus on key terminology in order to support improvements in Literacy.
